Sports

We are extremely fortunate to have an international standard golf course 10 minutes drive away at Vipingo Ridge. www.vipingoridge.co.ke and in Nyali is one of Kenya’s finest golf courses. www.nyaligolf.co.ke   There are now flights direct from Nairobi to Vipingo three times a week on Safarilink airline so you no longer have to travel to Mombasa or Malindi.  Golfers may pay the daily rate to play at Vipingo Ridge - Kenya’s premier course. About $40/round, half if signed in by a member or from a reciprocating club.  

A set of golf club is available at the house for your use. There is swimming and snorkelling off the beach in the estate. The gardener can organise fishermen to take you sailing in a local outrigger-dhow inside the reef. From about Oct-March it is possible to go outside the reef. There is a marine conservation area about 1km north where they can take you for excellent snorkelling

The estate has a large swimming pool. We have a set of weights at the house for the serious fitness type. 

There is one adult mountain bike and one kid’s bike that guests can use.

Lots of windsurfing and sailing from the Nyali hotels 30 minutes towards Mombasa.

Wild Waters is an excellent and often quite quiet water fun park with a range of slides. This is closed on Mondays except on public holidays. Mombasa Go-karting  caters for all ages at reasonable prices. Both are in Nyali, Mombasa (about 40 mins drive).

3 degrees south provide great water sport courses for adults and kids on Kilifi creek at very reasonable prices.  Our kids have gone several times and love it.  www.3degreessouth.co.ke  +254714757763

 

Restaurants

In Mombasa itself a wide range of restaurants including the famous Tamarind sea food restaurant which also runs evening dhow cruises.

At Kikambala beach (turn at Majengo about 10 mins south of Vipingo) the Maridadi Beach Bar & Restaurant,  0733736979 does fine seafood.

At Mtwapa The Moorings is in a lovely spot on the creek and serves good seafood. 0722411812

Parks and Nature

Half an hour away at Nyali, Bamburi Quarry Nature Park has a range of wildlife, particularly crocs, and safe walks. The next door Nature Trails is cheaper and mountain bikes can be hired.

Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, (contact details 04232462 sokoke@africaonline.co.ke) is a world famous site for bird-watchers with some very rare and endangered species. It’s an hour’s drive to the north on the Malindi Rd. Very knowledgeable guides are available, for instance contact Willie on 0723314416. Nearby are the fascinating Gedi ruins, remnants of early Swahili coastal civilisation.

Tsavo National Park, east gate is about 2 hours drive away.

Car hire and taxis

There are local and international car hire companies at Mombasa airport. We use a local company who rent saloon cars for 2500/day or about $35. There number is 0733613136.
